Isn't measles a mild childhood illness?

Here is what the checked sources say. Each title links to the original.

  1. Measles

    World Health Organization, 2026, explainer

WHO's fact sheet (updated July 2026) says measles killed an estimated 95,000 people worldwide in 2024, mostly unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children under five. Most deaths come from complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), blindness and severe diarrhea. Complications are most common in children under five and adults over 30, and more likely in malnourished children or those with weakened immune systems. One case can infect up to 18 others. WHO estimates vaccination prevented 59 million deaths worldwide between 2000 and 2024.

  2. Measles virus infection diminishes preexisting antibodies that offer protection from other pathogens

    Science, 2019, study

Researchers used a lab test (VirScan) that tracks antibodies to thousands of germ fragments, testing blood from 77 unvaccinated children before and two months after measles. Measles eliminated 11% to 73% of that measured antibody repertoire, depending on the child, and antibodies recovered after natural re-exposure to those germs. The effect was not seen in infants given MMR vaccine and was confirmed in infected monkeys. The authors say this loss of immune memory creates potential vulnerability to future infections; the study measured antibodies, not later illnesses. Two authors disclosed advisory roles with vaccine makers (Sanofi, GSK).

  3. Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis: The Devastating Measles Complication That Might Be More Common Than Previously Estimated

    Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2017, study

SSPE is a fatal brain disease that appears years after measles. A California review found 17 cases from 1998 to 2015; diagnosis came a median 9.5 years after infection. All 12 patients with a known history of measles-like illness had it before 15 months of age. Among measles cases reported in California in 1988 to 1991, SSPE later struck about 1 in 1,367 children infected under age five and 1 in 609 infected under one year. The authors say unvaccinated infants were at particular risk.
